The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another significant setback in Sokoto State as senior officials of the Sokoto State Traders' Associations officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday.

The mass defection, led by the Chairman of the Traders' Associations, Alhaji Chika Sarkin-Gishiri, was welcomed by Senator Aliyu Wamakko (APC – Sokoto Central) at his residence in Sokoto. The senator described the development as a major political advantage for the APC as Governor Ahmed Aliyu's administration marks its second year in office.

While welcoming the new members, Senator Wamakko assured them of equal rights and full inclusion within the party structure. "There is no reason not to carry all the traders along now that you have decided to work with the government, we believe that lots will be achieved," he stated.

The senator reaffirmed the administration's commitment to completing the renovation of the Sokoto Central Market, which had previously been destroyed by fire. He also outlined several business-friendly initiatives aimed at providing financial assistance to traders to stimulate economic growth and development in the state.

Addressing the ongoing water supply challenges in Sokoto, Senator Wamakko blamed the former PDP government for dismantling critical water infrastructure, which he claimed has contributed to the current shortages. He assured residents that efforts were underway to enhance the capacity of the State Water Board to improve access to clean water.

Speaking on behalf of the defecting traders, Sarkin-Gishiri described the move as a significant political loss for the PDP. He explained that their decision to join the APC was motivated by a shared vision for development. "We are now ready to work together with the government to promote policies that will liberate the people," he declared.

Alhaji Ladan Almustapha, former chairman of the association and current Chairman of the Sokoto State Chamber of Commerce, also praised Senator Wamakko's leadership, noting that the entire association had unanimously decided to defect. He emphasized their commitment to supporting the current administration in building a stronger and more resilient Sokoto State.

This latest defection represents another blow to the PDP's influence in Sokoto State, which has been experiencing a gradual erosion of its political base in recent months.
