Senator Neda Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, has announced his intention to leave the Labour Party (LP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Edo South Senator, who was elected under the Labour Party platform, revealed that he will formally announce his defection on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Speaking in Benin on Sunday during the commemoration of his second year as a Senator, Imasuen attributed his decision to the ongoing chaos within the Labour Party. He described the move as a strategic decision that would better position Edo South to benefit from federal development initiatives under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Achievements in Office

During his address, Senator Imasuen highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including the establishment of the Federal College of Education, the passage of the Abudu Bill, and the resolution of over 20 public petitions from across Nigeria.

"As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions, we have resolved over 20 public petitions from across the country. These interventions have made a significant difference in the lives of ordinary Nigerians," he stated.

The Senator also mentioned his contributions to vocational training schemes, agricultural support programmes, rural initiative training for traditional birth attendants, and scholarship opportunities for students in his senatorial district.

Agricultural Initiatives

Imasuen emphasized his focus on agricultural development within his constituency, particularly in rubber, cocoa, and cashew farming sectors.

"We've focused on rubber, cocoa, and cashew farming. There are testimonies from farmers whose yields have improved significantly," he noted.

Support for Tinubu's Policies

The Edo South Senator expressed strong support for President Tinubu's policies and stressed the importance of stronger cooperation at the local government level. He pledged to maintain his focus on health, youth empowerment, and rural development initiatives.

Imasuen's planned defection comes amid reports of internal challenges within the Labour Party, with similar defections occurring across different levels of government in recent months.

Political analysts suggest this move could significantly impact the political landscape in Edo State, particularly as the state approaches its next electoral cycle.
