Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has dismissed suggestions that the All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term out of fear of opposition coalitions forming ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly on Tuesday, the former Abia State Governor expressed confidence in the ruling party's track record and its ability to secure victory in the upcoming elections.
"We are a ruling party. We are passionate about Nigeria. We love this country, and that is why many of us are building industries to create jobs not just depending on government," Kalu stated.
The Senator representing Abia North emphasized that the APC has no reason to be intimidated by emerging opposition alliances. "There's no fear. The opposition will always criticise, and that's their job. Our job is to deliver, and I believe the Nigerian people will appreciate President Tinubu's work in the years ahead," he added.
Kalu, who chairs the newly established Senate Committee on the Southeast Development Commission, revealed that the Southeast APC caucus had endorsed Tinubu weeks before the national declaration.
"Look at what I'm wearing," Kalu said, pointing to his attire. "It's tailored as an endorsement. The Southeast caucus met, chaired by Governor Hope Uzodinma and co-chaired by Governor Francis Nwifuru and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. We were the first to push for a national endorsement."
The former governor also praised President Tinubu's economic reforms, particularly highlighting the decision to end fuel subsidy and unify the exchange rate.
"This is the first President to end fuel subsidy and unify the exchange rate. That's why things are tough now, because we are not used to hard work. But these are necessary sacrifices. Nigerians will see the results in two to three years," Kalu explained.
The early endorsement of President Tinubu comes as various opposition parties are reportedly exploring potential coalitions to challenge the APC in the 2027 presidential election.
