The Nigerian Navy has successfully busted and destroyed eight illegal crude oil refining sites in Delta State as part of its ongoing efforts to combat economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region.
Navy Captain Ikenna Okoloagu, Commanding Officer of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Escravos, confirmed the operations while briefing journalists in Warri on Tuesday. He revealed that the operations were conducted under Operation DELTA SANITY II, a strategic initiative aimed at curbing illegal oil activities in Nigeria's oil-rich region.
"In total, the three operations led to the deactivation of eight illegal refining sites, with the seizure of approximately 16,040 litres of stolen crude oil and 1,650 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO)," Okoloagu disclosed.
According to the Navy Captain, the illegal refining materials were discovered concealed in two makeshift refining ovens, 43 dugout pits, and 18 polythene sacks.
The operation represents a significant blow to illegal oil refining activities that have plagued the Niger Delta region for years, causing environmental degradation and substantial economic losses to the nation.
The Nigerian Navy continues to intensify its efforts against crude oil theft and illegal refining operations as part of the federal government's commitment to protecting Nigeria's natural resources and boosting the country's oil production capacity.
This latest operation underscores the military's determination to rid the Niger Delta of economic saboteurs and protect critical national infrastructure in Nigeria's oil and gas sector.
