Suspected kidnappers have launched a revenge attack against security operatives in Abraka community, Delta State, following a successful joint operation that resulted in the death of four abductors including their gang leader.
The ambush occurred shortly after police, vigilantes, and hunters had killed four kidnappers in a joint operation in the university town. Several security officials were reportedly feared killed and injured in the attack, triggering fresh tension in the community.
Series of Violent Incidents
The crisis began when suspected kidnappers attacked and killed two residents who had gone to the bush for a land transaction on Wednesday. Upon receiving the report, police mobilized to the scene alongside local hunters and vigilantes.
In a separate incident, Marcus Dafe, a resident who had participated in Monday's protest against kidnapping in Abraka, was reportedly shot dead by suspected kidnappers. The protest had earlier been disrupted by security agents.
Following these events, security forces engaged the kidnappers in a shootout, recovering and removing two bodies from the scene. However, the kidnappers, seeking revenge for the killing of their gang leader and three others, mounted a siege on vehicles entering Abraka.
Ambush on Security Forces
When the Divisional Police Officer mobilized forces to the area, the kidnappers, who had laid an ambush, opened fire on the security operatives. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, reports indicate that several security personnel were injured in the attack.
The situation has created significant tension in Abraka, prompting Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to summon an emergency security meeting in Asaba.
Earlier Police Operation
Prior to the ambush, police had claimed a major victory with the killing of four kidnappers who had been terrorizing the Abraka community. The operation also resulted in the recovery of one AK-47 rifle with thirteen rounds of live ammunition.
According to SP Bright Edafe, the command's spokesman, the joint operation was conducted at approximately 3:00 AM on Wednesday following intelligence on kidnapping activities along the Abraka Railway axis.
"Four of the suspected kidnappers were shot during the gun duel and later gave up the ghost, while others escaped with gunshot injuries," Edafe stated. He added that a recently rescued kidnap victim had identified one of the deceased suspects as the leader of the gang that had abducted him.
Community Impact
The ambush has reportedly triggered fresh tensions between residents of Abraka and northerners living in the community. In response to the escalating situation, authorities at Delta State University (DELSU) in Abraka have temporarily suspended academic activities.
As investigations continue, security forces remain on high alert in the area, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnapping gang who escaped with gunshot wounds.
