The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder patrol team has successfully discovered and disconnected a wellhead that was illegally connected to pipes for crude oil theft in Rivers State.
According to an official statement released on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, the naval team also deactivated eight illegal refinery sites in Egbema, Rivers State. The operation uncovered 26 refining ovens, 30 reservoirs, and 32 dugout pits containing substantial amounts of illegally siphoned crude oil and refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
The Navy's crackdown on illegal oil activities extended to Delta State, where on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, NNS Delta discovered and deactivated 16 dug-out pits and several sacks filled with stolen crude oil in Obodo Omadino community, Warri South-West Local Government Area.
Intensified Naval Operations Against Oil Theft
These operations highlight the Nigerian Navy's ongoing efforts to combat illegal oil bunkering and crude oil theft in the Niger Delta region. The discoveries come at a time when Nigeria is working to protect its oil resources and maximize revenue from its petroleum sector.
The Nigerian Navy has recently intensified its operations against maritime crimes, including the launch of special warships and helicopters to strengthen security in Nigeria's territorial waters. These efforts aim to safeguard the nation's economic assets and ensure environmental protection in oil-producing regions.
Illegal oil refining activities have long posed significant environmental hazards to communities in the Niger Delta, contaminating water sources and agricultural lands while depriving the government of substantial revenue.
The Navy continues to collaborate with other security agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Army, to identify and dismantle illegal refining operations across the oil-rich southern region of Nigeria.
