Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has expressed concern over the growing negligence of parents towards their children, which he believes has directly contributed to moral decadence and various social vices plaguing society.
In his message commemorating the 2025 Children's Day celebration, delivered through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago emphasized that children deserve the best in life and proper upbringing from their earliest years.
"Giving them the best at the earliest stages of their lives would go a long way in ensuring a good, peaceful, and sustainable society," the governor stated.
Bago also expressed dismay over the various forms of violence and hard labour that many children are subjected to across the state. He assured residents that his administration remains committed to enforcing and protecting the rights of children in Niger State.
The governor called on parents, teachers, and all relevant stakeholders to reassess their commitments to child upbringing, urging them to improve their approaches to ensure a sound society.
This statement comes amid growing concerns about child welfare issues in Nigeria, where challenges such as child labor, early marriage, and limited access to quality education continue to affect millions of children despite existing child protection laws.
Children's Day is celebrated annually on May 27th in Nigeria, providing an opportunity to focus attention on children's rights, welfare, and development.
