Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for endorsing President Bola Tinubu's second term bid while neglecting urgent national challenges facing Nigerians.

Speaking at a political consultative meeting organized by the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja on Sunday, Malami expressed concern over what he described as misplaced priorities by the ruling party amid worsening socio-economic conditions in the country.

"Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and instead of addressing the serious issues of insecurity, economic hardship and rising poverty, it chose to focus on politics, endorsing President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate for the 2027 election that is still two years away," Malami stated.

The former AGF, who served under the Buhari administration from 2015 to 2023, claimed that Tinubu's policies are crippling the economy, particularly in northern Nigeria. His criticism comes after the APC's May 22 summit in Abuja, where the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) declared support for Tinubu's second-term ambition.

The political consultative meeting was attended by several opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers Governor Chibuike Amaechi.

A communique issued at the end of the meeting, signed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, called for northern unity in future political decisions. It also urged the formation of a political platform to safeguard the region's interests.

The document further condemned what it described as the impunity of elected officials who endorse themselves or others for political positions without consulting their constituents, calling for sanctions to deter such practices in the future.

Malami is reportedly among a growing number of APC members from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc expressing dissatisfaction with the current direction of the party under Tinubu's leadership.
