Former Attorney General of the Federation and ex-minister of justice, Abubakar Malami, has strongly criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly prioritizing political campaigns over governance responsibilities.

Speaking at the National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting in Abuja, Malami accused the ruling party of being insensitive to the plight of Nigerians by focusing on the 2027 elections rather than addressing current national challenges.

"Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and instead of addressing the serious issues of insecurity, economic hardship and rising poverty, it chose to focus on politics, endorsing President Bola Tinubu as sole candidate for the 2027 election that is still two years away," Malami stated.

The former justice minister urged elected officials and political appointees to prioritize the immediate needs of Nigerians rather than focusing on an election that is still far off. He emphasized that governance should take precedence over political maneuvering at this critical time.

Despite his criticisms, Malami reportedly remains an active member of the APC, though he has expressed dissatisfaction with some actions taken by party members. Malami served in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari as Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

This criticism comes amid reports of coalition-building among opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, who are reportedly uniting against President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts view Malami's comments as significant given his previous high-ranking position within the APC government and his continued membership in the party.
