Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed 18 new laws including one that scraps the Abia State Estate Development Agency (ABSEDA) and another establishing provisions for senior citizens in the state.
The signing ceremony took place on Monday during an enlarged meeting attended by executive council members and the leadership of the Abia State House of Assembly.
Among the notable laws signed was the Abia State Senior Citizens Law 2025, which aims to provide care and support for Abia residents aged 60 years and above. The governor also assented to the Abia State Road Maintenance Agency (Repeal) Law 2025 and the Abia State Orientation Agency (Amendment) Law 2025.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otti emphasized that the new laws align with his administration's community and neighborhood development proposals outlined in his manifesto and the recommendations of the transition committee report of 2023.
"These laws represent our commitment to restructuring governance for efficiency and improving the welfare of our citizens," the governor stated while thanking lawmakers for their support to the executive arm.
The Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the bills as "abstract but very impactful on the people," noting that some were amendments to existing legislation.
Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechuckwu Uwanna, explained that the scrapped ABSEDA would now operate under the Abia State Ministry of Lands and Housing. He further clarified that some of the affected government agencies would now report directly to their respective ministries rather than to the Governor's office.
With these additions, the total number of laws signed by Governor Otti's administration has now reached 30, signaling continued legislative reforms in the state.
