Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has made a bold declaration regarding President Bola Tinubu's political future, stating that the president cannot secure re-election in 2027 given the current state of affairs in Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) national updates, El-Rufai emphatically stated: "Anybody that thinks it is possible for President Bola Tinubu to get re-elected is living in another country, not Nigeria. It is impossible for Bola Tinubu to get re-elected. I don't see a pathway for him, no matter how disorganised the opposition is. Who will vote for him? But that's my own opinion."
El-Rufai's comments come at a time when the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership and members of the National Assembly have publicly expressed confidence in Tinubu's administration by passing a vote of confidence in the president.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio had previously expressed optimism about Tinubu's re-election prospects, citing his position as the sole candidate of the party. Similarly, APC governors recently endorsed Tinubu as the party's presidential candidate during a summit in Abuja.
The former governor's statement appears to reference the current economic and political challenges facing Nigeria under Tinubu's administration, suggesting these factors would significantly impact the president's chances at securing a second term.
This development adds to the growing political discourse surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with various stakeholders already positioning themselves within Nigeria's complex political landscape.
El-Rufai's comments have sparked reactions across political circles, particularly as they come from a prominent figure who has previously been associated with the ruling party.
