The Abia State Police Command has rescued twelve children from an alleged child trafficking operation run by a couple at an unregistered motherless babies home in Aba.
According to DSP Maureen Chinaka, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, Sunday Emebo and his wife Blessing Emebo were apprehended on May 19, 2025, following credible intelligence gathered by the police.
The couple was operating what authorities described as an "illegal motherless babies home" from their apartment located on Ikot Ekpene road in Aba. The rescued children, whose ages range from six to fourteen months, were reportedly brought from different villages.
"The arrested couple are presently being interrogated at the State Criminal Investigation Department and will soon be arraigned in court after investigations are concluded," DSP Chinaka stated.
The police spokesperson further revealed that all twelve rescued children have been safely handed over to the Abia State Ministry of Women Affairs for proper care and protection.
The Abia State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to reducing crime and criminality in the state and advised the public to remain security-conscious, particularly emphasizing that children should never be left with unfamiliar persons.
This case highlights the ongoing issue of child trafficking in Nigeria, where illegal orphanages sometimes serve as fronts for human trafficking operations. Authorities continue to crack down on such establishments as part of broader efforts to combat human trafficking nationwide.
