Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has called on parents and guardians to actively discourage their children from joining cult groups as Nigeria celebrates Children's Day on May 27, 2025.
In his Children's Day message, Governor Okpebholo extended warm felicitations to children across Edo State and Nigeria, describing the occasion as "a significant opportunity to celebrate the boundless potential, innocence, and vibrant spirit of young ones, who are the true leaders of tomorrow."
The Governor emphasized his administration's commitment to children's development, stating, "Our children are our most precious assets. Their dreams are the blueprints for a brighter future for Edo State. As an administration, we are fully dedicated to investing in their development, protecting their rights, and nurturing their talents."
Education Initiatives and Child Protection
Governor Okpebholo highlighted several key initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children in Edo State. Chief among these is the declaration of a state of emergency in public schools, with ongoing reconstruction and renovation efforts to upgrade school infrastructure and provide conducive learning environments.
The Governor also stressed the importance of safeguarding children from all forms of abuse and exploitation. He noted that the state is actively enforcing laws that protect children and ensure their access to education.
"The administration remains committed to creating opportunities that empower young people and prepare them to be productive citizens while also tackling issues that hinder their progress, such as cultism and violence," the Governor stated.
Economic Impact of Cultism
The Governor's focus on cultism comes amid reports that Edo State loses over $1 billion annually to cult-related violence, highlighting the economic impact of the issue beyond its social consequences.
Governor Okpebholo affirmed that his administration believes "every child deserves a fair chance at success, irrespective of their background" and promised to continue working "tirelessly to provide the children with the necessary tools and support to excel in their academic pursuits, develop their skills, and contribute meaningfully to society."
In his concluding remarks, the Governor called on all stakeholders—parents, guardians, teachers, and others—to play their crucial roles in guiding and mentoring children, instilling sound values, and encouraging them to pursue their aspirations.
He urged Edo children to "embrace education, dream big, and strive for excellence," assuring them of his administration's continuous support in their journey towards a successful future.
