Former Italy international Mario Balotelli has candidly revealed why he failed to reach the heights of Cristiano Ronaldo's illustrious career, citing differences in work ethic as the primary reason.
Speaking to Rai2 in a recent interview, the Ghanaian-born Italian striker admitted, "He [Ronaldo] kills himself with training, I don't... He has more money! I could have done more, but I'm happy."
Balotelli, once considered one of football's most promising talents, has had a journeyman career spanning several top European clubs including Inter Milan, AC Milan, Manchester City, and Liverpool. Despite his undeniable talent, many football observers believe he never fully realized his potential.
"I thank the fans who love me, but I made the wrong choice for the type of club," Balotelli reflected on his career decisions. The 34-year-old striker currently plays for Italian Serie A side Genoa, though his contract is set to expire this summer.
Looking ahead to his future, Balotelli confirmed plans to move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States. "Yes, America. I will play two or three years before I stop," he stated, effectively announcing his intention to end his European football career.
"It's unlikely that I will play again in Italy or Europe," added the former Premier League star.
In contrast to Balotelli's career trajectory, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to break records even at 40 years of age. The Portuguese superstar recently received his second golden boot in the Saudi Pro League and is reportedly aiming to become the first footballer to score 1,000 career goals.
Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al-Nassr, has hinted that his chapter with the Saudi club may be coming to an end. Reports suggest he is arranging a move to rivals Al Hilal to participate in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Balotelli's honest assessment of his career compared to Ronaldo's highlights the importance of work ethic and dedication in achieving sustained success at the highest levels of professional football.
