A 28-year-old man, Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, has been brutally murdered by suspected cultists in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos State. The fatal attack occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

According to eyewitness accounts, a group of machete-wielding assailants, believed to be cult members, invaded the neighborhood in search of Olanrewaju's elder brother. When they could not locate their intended target at his residence, the attackers proceeded to a furniture workshop on Abeokuta Street where Olanrewaju was keeping watch.

"When they got to his house and didn't meet him, they perceived he must be in his furniture shop. On getting there, they met his younger brother who was staying there and watching over the place," said a resident who requested anonymity for safety concerns.

The witness further described the horrific attack: "Without saying a word, they brought out machetes and started cutting him. They cut his face, his back, and his hands."

Another resident, also speaking on condition of anonymity, described the aftermath as horrifying, confirming that Olanrewaju died instantly from the multiple machete wounds. The attackers reportedly fled the scene before help could arrive.

"It was a gory sight. Olanrewaju usually stayed in the shop whenever his brother was not around. We got to know that they were actually looking for the elder brother. The entire community is still in shock. We've never seen anything this violent here," the source added.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident: "Olanrewaju Ogunyemi aged 28 was killed at about 7:45 pm in his furniture shop. A gang of suspected cultists attacked him with machetes on his face, head, back and hand. He died on the spot."

The deceased was buried the following day, Thursday, May 22. Meanwhile, the whereabouts of his elder brother, who appears to have been the original target of the attack, remain unknown.

This incident adds to growing concerns about cult-related violence in Lagos State. Authorities have yet to disclose whether any arrests have been made in connection with the murder as investigations continue.
