A renowned cleric, Reverend Father Mimang Lekyil, aged 70, was shot dead by suspected kidnappers who attacked his residence in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State on Sunday night.
According to local sources, the assailants forced their way into the cleric's home around 9:00 p.m. while residents were asleep. Bishop Ayuba Matawal, who confirmed the incident, revealed that two women were initially kidnapped during the attack.
"They shot the reverend. The two women in the house were kidnapped but later rescued by residents of the area," Bishop Matawal stated.
The bishop further disclosed that the body of the deceased cleric has been taken to Muna Mortuary in Bokkos for preservation.
In the aftermath of the killing, tensions escalated as angry residents reportedly targeted Fulani settlements in the area, burning several homes in Dingak village. Sa'id Adamu, a Fulani youth leader, confirmed the destruction of houses in the settlement.
Local vigilantes were said to have fought to rescue the two women who had been kidnapped during the initial attack.
As of the time of reporting, the police authorities in Plateau State have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
This attack adds to the growing security concerns in Plateau State, which has witnessed numerous violent incidents in recent years.
