Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed in a fire incident that ravaged a residential building at Agogbo Phase 2, Fola Tyre area of Oyo State on Saturday evening.

The fire, which occurred at 45 Lane 2B, Agogbo Phase 2, was reportedly caused by a plasma television that had been left plugged in when not in use. The incident happened when the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) restored power supply to the area.

According to sources, two rooms in the residential building were affected by the inferno, resulting in the destruction of valuable properties estimated to be worth millions of naira.

Hon. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the incident on Sunday. In a statement made available to the press, Akinwande said, "The fire incident was reported at exactly 19:15hrs on Saturday 24th May 2025. The agency's officers led by ACFS Tijani Bamidele promptly deployed to the scene of the incident."

"On getting to the scene of the incident, we met the living room of a two-bedroom flat engulfed by fire. The firemen swiftly swung into action and the fire was curtailed and restricted from spreading to the other parts of the building," he added.

Akinwande emphasized that the root cause of the fire was the plasma television that had been left plugged in when not in use, which caught fire when power was restored.

The Fire Service chairman confirmed that no casualties were recorded in the incident. He stated that the fire affected only the living room of the building, and officers of the agency were able to save properties worth millions of naira from being destroyed.

This incident serves as a reminder to residents about the importance of unplugging electrical appliances when not in use, especially in areas with unstable power supply, to prevent similar fire outbreaks.
