The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, has inaugurated a ministerial committee tasked with the assessment, completion planning, and disposal strategy for a 753-unit housing estate recently recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The inauguration ceremony took place on Monday in Abuja, where Dangiwa revealed that the EFCC had recovered the estate and officially handed it over to the ministry.
During the ceremony, the minister commended the anti-graft agency for its intervention, noting that it has created an opportunity for the Federal Government to transform what was once "a symbol of public sector inefficiency and abuse into a beacon of public service and national renewal."
"In line with the vision of the President and the housing reform drive of our ministry, this committee has been constituted to ensure that the recovered property is quickly transformed into liveable, secure, and affordable homes for the benefit of Nigerians," Dangiwa stated.
The minister emphasized the significance of the assignment, describing it as "a mission to deliver value, hope and homes" rather than just another government task.
The high-level ministerial committee is chaired by the ministry's permanent secretary and includes directors and special advisers. According to Dangiwa, committee members were carefully selected based on their technical competence, integrity, and ability to handle the initiative with urgency.
The committee's terms of reference include conducting thorough structural and integrity tests of the buildings, ascertaining the number and status of housing units, and evaluating the value of existing work through proper surveying and market valuation.
Additionally, the committee will assess the cost of completing essential infrastructure such as internal roads, power, water, security infrastructure, and public amenities. They are also tasked with developing standardized architectural and finishing guides to ensure consistency and quality assurance.
This initiative aligns with the Federal Government's broader commitment to providing affordable housing for Nigerians, as the ministry has previously announced plans to deliver 77,400 housing units under various schemes.
