A Catholic priest, Reverend Father James Omeh, and his passenger have died after being swept away by floodwaters following a bridge collapse in Niger State.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, May 24, 2025, around noon when Father Omeh, who served as the parish priest of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gulu, Lapai Local Government Area, attempted to navigate a section of the Lapai-Gulu Road where a bridge had collapsed due to heavy rainfall the previous night.
According to local sources, Father Omeh, who was also the coordinator of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Lapai LGA, tried to make a U-turn towards Duma village when he encountered the collapsed bridge. However, his Hilux vehicle was overwhelmed by strong floodwaters, sweeping away both the priest and his passenger, identified as Charity John.
The bodies were later recovered with assistance from local volunteers and the Sarkin Ruwa (King of Water) from a nearby village.
Community members have expressed concerns about the poor condition of the Lapai-Gulu Road, stating that they have repeatedly called for government intervention to prevent such accidents.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has extended condolences to the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Christian community over the priest's death. In a statement released on Monday through his Special Adviser on Communication, Media and Strategy, Jonathan Vatsa, the governor described Father Omeh's death as "painful and very unfortunate."
"His passing is a great loss to CAN, the Christian community, and the state at large," the statement read.
Governor Bago praised the late priest for his commitment to community peacebuilding and religious harmony in the area. He noted that Father Omeh would be remembered for his recent efforts to promote unity and peaceful coexistence in Lapai Local Government Area, including a courtesy visit to the Emir of Lapai and other stakeholders.
The governor extended his heartfelt sympathy to CAN, the Catholic community, and the priest's family, praying for his eternal rest.
