An explosion suspected to be caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) killed one person and injured another on Monday near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja, Nigeria's capital city.

According to an eyewitness account from a military personnel who spoke on condition of anonymity, the deceased is believed to be a suicide bomber who was killed by an explosive contained in a rubber can. The explosion occurred in close proximity to the Mogadishu Barracks area.

However, military authorities present at the scene have offered a different perspective, suggesting that the explosion might have been caused by a phone device rather than an improvised explosive device.

As of the time of this report, a joint team of security and emergency response agencies including personnel from the military, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have cordoned off the area and are conducting a thorough assessment of the situation.

The incident has raised concerns about security in the Federal Capital Territory, coming at a time when the country continues to grapple with various security challenges.

Authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the identity of the deceased or the exact cause of the explosion as investigations are still ongoing.

Residents of Abuja are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.
