Abia State's contingent has made a significant impact at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival, Gateway Games, amassing an impressive total of 47 medals thus far in the competition.

The medal haul comprises 9 gold, 9 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with several events and categories yet to be contested. The state's athletes have demonstrated remarkable skill and determination across various sporting disciplines.

A standout performance came from Kalu Eke Onwuka, popularly known as "Scorpion," who set a record in the shot put event with a throw of 16.90m, earning a gold medal for Team Abia. Onwuka has consistently proven to be a reliable athlete for the state.

Another notable achievement came from Nnanna Ijeri, who secured gold in the 86+kg category of Para Power Lift with an impressive lift of 122kg. These performances highlight the depth of talent within the Abia contingent.

Despite facing challenges including injuries to some team members, the remaining fit athletes are determined to finish the National Sports Festival on a high note, continuing to add to their medal count in the remaining events.
