The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced his decision to withdraw from all agreements previously reached with the People's Democratic Party (PDP) leadership, citing betrayal of trust and ongoing party crisis.

In a personally signed statement titled "PDP crisis: My Position," Wike expressed his frustration with the current state of affairs within Nigeria's main opposition party, revealing he has been working tirelessly for the party's survival since 1998.

"I have been in this party since 1998 and have worked tirelessly for the survival of this party with all my strength and it is on record that none of these persons have done anything close to what I have done to sustain this party," Wike stated.

The former Rivers State governor highlighted what he described as a painful reality—having substantially contributed to the electoral success of several PDP governors without making personal demands.

"What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so," he emphasized.

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since before the 2023 presidential election, when Wike led the G-5 governors—including Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (former Benue governor), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (former Enugu governor), and Okezie Ikpeazu (former Abia governor)—to work against the party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

The crisis has since evolved into a struggle over the position of PDP National Secretary, with Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye at odds despite a Supreme Court ruling affirming Anyanwu's position.

A reconciliation committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki had been working to resolve the party's internal conflicts. However, Wike's latest announcement suggests these efforts may have hit a significant roadblock.

"I had thought that we could keep the trust amongst us, but since it is now obvious that they would continue to play games to the detriment of the party, as is the case in the current debacle in the North-Central zonal elections, I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached," Wike declared.

This development comes at a critical time for the PDP as it attempts to reorganize and strengthen its position as Nigeria's main opposition party ahead of future elections.
