Security operatives in Niger State have apprehended the village head of Guiwa, Mai Anguwa Garba Mohammed, along with 13 other individuals over allegations of collaborating with armed bandits in Mashegu Local Government Area.

The arrests were carried out on May 23, 2025, during a joint clearance operation conducted by police officers, hunters, and local vigilantes targeting bandit hideouts in Guiwa and Telle villages, according to security analyst Zagazola Makama who disclosed the information via his verified X handle on Sunday.

The village head reportedly faces accusations of providing shelter and logistical support to bandits operating in the region. The 13 other suspects, residents of various nearby communities, were arrested on similar charges of complicity with criminal elements.

Among those arrested are Alhaji Abdullahi Shehu from Wawa village in Borgu LGA, Umar Abubakar of Gwajibo, Musa Mohammed of Telle village, Mohammed Abubakar from Dukku in Rijau LGA, and several others from communities including Pallagi, Arera, Adogon Mallam, and Lumma.

During a search of the village head's residence, security operatives reportedly recovered incriminating items including four motorcycles, one live cartridge, and ten cattle believed to have been stolen. Three of the cattle, which were found with injuries, were slaughtered due to their condition.

Security sources in Niger State have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, noting that the operation forms part of broader efforts to dismantle support networks for criminal elements in the region.

This development comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to combat the rising wave of banditry and other criminal activities across northern Nigeria, with particular focus on rural communities that have been vulnerable to attacks.

Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the specific charges against the suspects or when they will appear in court as the investigation continues.
