The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has confirmed that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi intends to contest the 2027 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP) platform, at least "for now."

Speaking on Saturday, Tanko revealed that Obi made this statement during a coffee party in Abuja when questioned about his political future. "He spoke at a coffee party in Abuja where he was asked if he will still run under the Labour Party and he said he's still a member and will run under the party 'for now,'" Tanko explained.

The statement comes amid ongoing discussions about a potential opposition coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. Obi has been actively involved in these coalition talks alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and other opposition stakeholders.

According to reports, the trio and other political figures met on Tuesday night to finalize arrangements for the official unveiling of the coalition. Despite his involvement in these discussions, Obi has affirmed his continued membership in the Labour Party.

The caveat "for now" in Obi's statement has sparked speculation about his long-term political plans, particularly regarding whether he might eventually contest under a different platform or a unified opposition coalition banner.

Obi, who was the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has maintained a significant political following through the Obidient Movement, which continues to advocate for his political aspirations.

Political analysts are closely monitoring these developments as opposition figures work to create a formidable coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in the next presidential election.
