Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not collapse despite the recent wave of defections from the party.
Speaking on Saturday during the PDP's North Central Zonal Elective Congress in Jos, Plateau State, Moro expressed confidence that the former ruling party will bounce back stronger from its current crisis and membership losses.
"I can confidently assure you that the PDP is not collapsing, contrary to insinuations," Moro stated, addressing concerns about the party's future.
The Benue South Senator also dismissed fears that Nigeria might slide into a one-party state following the recent defections from the opposition party.
"I have no fear of Nigeria becoming a one-party state. Not at all. I don't believe that's a likely outcome. Yes, defections have a ripple effect, and the initial shock can be significant. But after that, PDP members will regroup, recommit, and rededicate themselves to the cause. I am confident that the PDP is coming back stronger," he said.
Moro described the North Central zonal congress as "a very successful event" with enthusiastic delegates from across the zone, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
He explained that the zonal congress is part of a series of activities the PDP has lined up to address the internal crisis within the party, which he attributed to leadership struggles.
"These activities are all leading up to the National Convention for the election of a brand-new party leadership. Let's not forget that the apparent crisis in the party stems from a leadership struggle," Moro noted.
The Senator added that with new leaders being elected from the ward to the local government, state, zonal, and eventually national levels, the process will "breathe new life into the PDP."
The congress was attended by prominent party leaders, including former Governor Bukola Saraki, signaling the party's commitment to rebuilding its structure and preparing for future electoral contests.
