Former Senate President and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Adolphus Wabara, has declared that President Bola Tinubu's political fate in the 2027 presidential election will be determined by Nigerian voters, not by governors.
Wabara's statement comes in response to the recent adoption of President Tinubu as the sole candidate for the 2027 presidential race by governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
While acknowledging that giving the President the right of first refusal is "a global practice and tradition," Wabara emphasized that being the flag bearer of the ruling party does not guarantee electoral victory.
"I thank APC governors for respecting the age-long tradition of giving a first-time President or governor the right of first refusal. I didn't expect less," Wabara stated. "But I would like to remind them that governors do not have the mandate to decide who becomes President in 2027. Such right resides with the electorate."
The former Senate President recalled the 2015 elections when then-President Goodluck Jonathan of the PDP lost to the opposition APC candidate despite being the incumbent. He advised the APC to allow President Tinubu's performance to speak for itself.
Wabara also cautioned against overheating the political climate with discussions about the 2027 elections when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet lifted the ban on campaigns.
Instead, he urged APC governors to focus on addressing the economic challenges facing Nigerians. "I think the APC should rather be preoccupied with how to make life better for millions of Nigerians, who have been forced into poverty due to APC's misrule and bad economic policies," he said.
The PDP BoT Chairman's comments highlight the growing political discourse surrounding the 2027 presidential election, even as the current administration is still in its early stages.
