A tragic incident occurred in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State on Friday when a truck rammed into students returning from school, killing one female student and severely injuring another.

The victims, students of Seico Secondary School, Ikangba, were returning home after writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when the accident happened on the newly rehabilitated Ikangba/Agoro road.

According to eyewitness accounts, the truck, coming from the Molipa area, lost control and collided with the students who were walking in the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that one female student died instantly at the scene.

Eko Nicholas, chairman of Ogun State chapter of Campaign for Democratic and Workers Rights and a resident of the area, provided details of the incident: "The students were obviously those writing this ongoing WASSCE because they were holding the question papers. One of the students, a female, died on the spot while another female was also critically injured. We are all praying she makes it."

After hitting the students, the truck crashed into the fence of a Redeemed Christian Church of God building adjacent to the road.

Nicholas blamed the accident on the government's failure to install speed bumps or breakers that could help control reckless driving on the road. He noted that this latest tragedy brings the death toll on the Ikangba/Agoro road to six since February, with numerous others suffering injuries.

"We again call on the state government to construct speed breakers and street lights to stem these avoidable and painful deaths," Nicholas appealed.

When contacted, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the incident, stating that "one school pupil died."

This incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety around educational institutions in Ogun State, with community leaders calling for immediate government intervention to prevent further tragedies.
