Former Sokoto State Deputy Governor, Muktar Shagari, has defended the All Progressives Congress (APC) decision to declare President Bola Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, describing the move as constitutional while dismissing calls for open primaries as a distraction.

Speaking on Arise Television's Morning Show programme on Friday, Shagari explained that it is customary in political party dynamics to support sitting leaders rather than search for alternatives.

"In political party dynamics, especially when there is an incumbent president or governor, it is customary for the party to support the sitting leader rather than search for another candidate," Shagari stated.

He further emphasized that incumbent leaders are typically granted the right of first refusal, adding: "We in the APC have absolute confidence in President Bola Tinubu's ability to run this country effectively. For President Tinubu to fulfill the promises he made to Nigerians, he needs a second term."

The endorsement comes after the APC National Assembly Caucus and the party's Governors' Forum on Thursday collectively backed Tinubu for a second term, citing what they described as his good works since assuming office.

Political analysts view this early endorsement as a strategic move by the ruling party to consolidate its position ahead of the 2027 general elections, effectively shutting the door on potential challengers within the party.

President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023, is currently serving his first term as Nigeria's president. The APC's early endorsement signals the party's intention to present a united front as the country gradually approaches another election cycle.
