Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has declared his unwavering commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the opposition party.

Saraki made this declaration on Friday following a PDP Strategy and Way Forward Committee meeting in Enugu State with Governor Peter Mbah, Senator Seriake Dickson, and Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo.

"I believe in the PDP. I believe in what it has stood for and what it can still become, if we're willing to do the hard, unglamorous work of rebuilding from the inside out," Saraki stated in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

The former Senate President revealed that the committee directly addressed the internal challenges facing the party. "We didn't sidestep the issues. We confronted the fractures in our foundation, asked the hard questions, and began shaping a real, workable plan to move our party forward," he said.

PDP's Leadership Crisis

The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership tussle over the position of National Secretary. The crisis began when Samuel Anyanwu temporarily left the position to contest for the Imo State governorship election, which he subsequently lost.

During Anyanwu's absence, the Southeast Caucus of the party endorsed Peter Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary. However, upon his return after losing the election, Anyanwu sought to reclaim his position, triggering a legal battle.

While the Appeal Court had affirmed Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary, the Supreme Court overturned this judgment, declaring Anyanwu as the legitimate occupant of the office.

This leadership crisis is just one of several challenges facing Nigeria's main opposition party, which has struggled to present a united front since losing the 2023 presidential election.

Path Forward

Despite acknowledging the difficulties ahead, Saraki expressed optimism about the party's future. "The road ahead won't be easy. It will test us and demand more from each of us. But I leave Enugu more convinced than ever: we have the people, the resolve, and the clarity to rise to the occasion—and to lead again," he stated.

The Strategy and Way Forward Committee appears to be part of efforts to rebuild the party's structure and reposition it as a formidable opposition ahead of future elections.

Political analysts view these reconciliatory moves as crucial for the PDP's survival and relevance in Nigeria's increasingly competitive political landscape, especially as the party works to overcome internal divisions that have plagued it since the 2023 general elections.
