Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has launched a scathing critique of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a political party that "was created out of anger, malice and hatred" and has "never been a serious political party."
The former governor made these claims in his recently released autobiography titled "Being True To Myself," which was unveiled to the public on May 13th. In chapter 16, page 421 of the book, Lamido, one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed his shock when he learned that some of his PDP colleagues had defected to the opposition ahead of the 2015 elections.
"I once had cause to explain to some members of the public after the APC was formed, that it was created out of anger, malice and hatred. It was not and has never been a serious political party; its proponents were only parochial scavengers, who see politics as a huge enterprise," Lamido stated in his book.
The former governor provided a historical context for his claims, noting: "In 1999, we had the PDP, AD and APP as the three major national parties and the AD and APP jointly fielded Olu Falae against PDP's candidate, Obasanjo, who won the election. The AD/APP alliance later dissolved into the ANPP, but they lost the elections; it was these losers that later came together to establish the APC."
Lamido further accused the APC of manipulating public perception, saying they "turned history upside down and promote a so-called 'Mr. Integrity' and hoodwinked Nigerians with false tags."
According to the autobiography, Lamido rejected multiple invitations to join the APC during the PDP's internal crisis. He maintained that the honorable course of action was to remain within the PDP and contribute to resolving the party's challenges rather than abandoning it.
This revelation comes at a time of ongoing political realignments in Nigeria as parties prepare for future electoral contests. Lamido's comments offer insight into the perspective of one of Nigeria's veteran politicians regarding the formation and character of the current ruling party.
