The Lagos State Police Command has successfully apprehended a 39-year-old prison escapee, Kabiru Oyedun, who fled from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State. The arrest took place on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the Ayobo area of Lagos.
Oyedun was identified as one of several inmates who escaped through a compromised section of the prison's perimeter wall. According to reports, the structural breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa was reportedly caused by heavy rainfall.
Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the development, attributing the successful capture to "sustained surveillance and intelligence-led policing."
"Kabiru Oyedun was trailed and arrested in Ayobo on May 21, 2025, at about 5:30 pm by operatives of the Command attached to Ayobo Division. This is largely due to the proactive and preventive measures put in place by the Lagos State Police Command to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the state," Hundeyin stated.
Following his arrest, police sources revealed that Oyedun will be handed over to the appropriate correctional authorities for transfer back to Osun State.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) had previously launched a manhunt for all escapees from the Ilesa facility. To expedite recaptures, the NCoS announced a substantial reward of N5 million for credible information leading to the arrest of any fugitives.
"To encourage public participation, the Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that a reward of N5 million is being offered to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre, Ilesha, Osun State," the NCoS had stated in their announcement.
This arrest highlights the ongoing collaborative efforts between different state police commands and correctional services to ensure that escaped prisoners are swiftly recaptured to maintain public safety.
