The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has elected Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri as its new chairman following elections held on Thursday in Jalingo, the state capital.

The election, which marks a significant leadership transition for Christians in the state, was supervised by a delegation from CAN's national leadership led by Rev. (Dr.) Mrs. Uzoaku Williams, who represented the CAN National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.

In his acceptance speech, Fr. Awoshiri, a Catholic priest and academic, emphasized his commitment to the association's guiding principle from John 17:21, "That they all may be one." He outlined his vision for strengthening Christian unity while promoting collaboration across religious lines.

"There can be no peace without unity, and no development without justice," Awoshiri stated. "My administration will engage like-minded individuals from all faiths to foster peace, uphold justice, and spur meaningful progress in Taraba."

The new chairman further stressed the importance of inclusive leadership that bridges denominational and interreligious divides. "Our diversity should be our strength, not our division," he noted, calling for a united Christian front to effectively advance the gospel.

New CAN Executive Team

Joining Awoshiri on the new executive team are:

- Rev. Samuel Ibrahim Jatau (CCN) - Vice Chairman
- Rev. Dr. Nelson Dunah (CPFN/PFN) - Secretary
- Rev. Samaila Tsapta (TEKAN/ECWA) - Assistant Secretary
- Apostle Sunday Adetiba (OAIC) - Treasurer

The new leadership is expected to navigate the complex religious landscape in Taraba State, addressing challenges facing Christians while promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperation for the overall development of the state.

Fr. Awoshiri's election represents a significant moment for Catholic leadership within the ecumenical body, as he takes on the responsibility of representing the collective interests of Christians across various denominations in Taraba State.
