President Bola Tinubu has openly declared his expectation that more politicians will defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing opposition parties as a "sinking ship with no life jackets."
Speaking during the APC's national summit on Thursday, Tinubu addressed criticisms about Nigeria potentially becoming a one-party state due to the recent wave of defections to the ruling party.
"I just need to tell those who say a one-party system is not good. You don't blame people bailing out of a sinking ship when they have no life jackets," the President stated.
Tinubu expressed satisfaction with the current political climate favoring his party, adding: "I'm glad for what we have, and I'm expecting more to come. That is the game. Welcome to progress; sweep them clean."
The President's comments come amid a surge of defections to the APC in recent weeks. Most notably, there are strong indications that Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, is finalizing plans to join the ruling party.
According to reports, Governor Eno has allegedly instructed his commissioners and other appointees to either join him in defecting to the APC or resign from their positions if they are uncomfortable with his decision.
Political analysts view these developments as potentially reshaping Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with some opposition figures already expressing concerns about democratic checks and balances in a political environment increasingly dominated by a single party.
The APC has continued to strengthen its position since Tinubu's inauguration, with several prominent opposition politicians crossing over to the ruling party in what observers describe as a strategic realignment of political forces in the country.
