The National Assembly on Thursday formally endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, passing a vote of confidence in his administration.
During the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit held in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas declared that Tinubu has performed exceptionally well in his first two years as president and deserves another term in office.
"Nigerians are saying that because you have done a difficult job very well, it is time to reward you by sending you back to the Presidency for a second term in office," Akpabio stated at the event.
The Senate President further moved a motion that Tinubu should return as the APC candidate unopposed and secure a second term as president in 2027.
Speaker Abbas seconded the motion, claiming to do so on behalf of all state legislatures across the country. "I stand on behalf of the entire 109 senators, 360 members of the House, and all the 36 speakers and their members to second this very important motion moved by the Senate President," he said.
The endorsement from the National Assembly follows a similar declaration by the Progressive Governors Forum, which had earlier backed Tinubu for a second term. Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the forum, assured that governors on the party's platform would work to ensure Tinubu's victory in the 2027 elections.
This development comes at a time when President Tinubu is halfway through his first term, with his administration implementing various economic and social reforms that have generated mixed reactions across the country.
The early endorsement by the National Assembly leadership and APC governors indicates the ruling party's strategy to consolidate support for Tinubu well ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
