The Nasarawa State government has issued a stern warning that anyone caught bullying children or other vulnerable persons will face prosecution, according to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Barr. Hauwa Jugbo.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday ahead of the 2025 National Children's Day celebration, the commissioner emphasized the government's zero-tolerance stance on bullying and its commitment to safeguarding children's rights and well-being.
"Parents, teachers, adults, and other caregivers who are responsible for the welfare of children must refrain from bullying those in their care, as such actions attract sanctions," Jugbo warned.
The commissioner expressed growing concern over increasing reports of bullying incidents not only in educational institutions but also within homes. She noted that victims often suffer long-term physical, emotional, and psychological trauma as a result of such mistreatment.
"What is most troubling is the sense of entitlement and lack of empathy displayed by some perpetrators, who believe they have the right to mistreat their victims," she stated.
Jugbo further highlighted that many bullying incidents go unreported, preventing authorities from intervening and bringing perpetrators to justice. This silence, she explained, can lead to serious consequences including severe injuries, death, or lasting anxiety that impedes victims' personal development and growth.
The commissioner reiterated that bullying constitutes a statutory offense under existing laws, and the state government remains committed to enforcing these laws to protect vulnerable groups.
According to Jugbo, the Nasarawa State government has consistently prioritized the protection of children and other vulnerable groups in accordance with UN resolutions and the domesticated Child Rights Law.
She assured the public that the government would continue its efforts to ensure vulnerable individuals are given the opportunity to reach their full potential, free from harassment and intimidation.
