A 23-year-old man, Victor Faleye, has been remanded in custody at a correctional facility following allegations of defiling and impregnating a 15-year-old girl in Lagos.
Faleye appeared before a Chief Magistrates' Court in Ikorodu on Thursday facing charges related to defilement. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate B.A. Sonuga, did not record the defendant's plea.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to the prosecution led by ASP Aminu Isaac, the alleged offence occurred around 9 p.m. on or before January 10 at No. 26 Okuno Street, Awono Estate, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The prosecutor informed the court that Faleye is accused of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with the minor, which reportedly resulted in pregnancy. This act violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Court Proceedings
Chief Magistrate Sonuga ordered Faleye's remand at a correctional centre and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
The case has been adjourned to June 30 for further proceedings pending the DPP's review.
Child sexual abuse remains a serious concern in Nigeria, with legal authorities taking stringent measures to prosecute offenders and protect minors from exploitation.
