The Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerian children from harmful broadcast content, emphasizing its regulatory role in filtering destructive materials from reaching young audiences.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 school debate competition organized by Vision Africa in Umuahia on Monday, NBC's Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, highlighted the commission's dedication to ensuring that broadcast messages consumed by children are beneficial and appropriate.

"At NBC, we are ensuring that consumers of broadcast messages consume what is good for them, so we align with what is happening here," Obi stated. "We are interested in our children and mindful of the kind of messages that you consume. We are conscious that the messages that are out in the airwaves are what is safe."

The debate competition, themed "Is the social media impactful to teenagers?" provided a platform for young Nigerians to discuss the influence of social media on their generation. Obi described Nigerian children as future leaders who deserve access to content that helps them make informed life choices rather than misleading information.

Government and Religious Support

Mrs. Priscilla Chidinma Otti, wife of the Abia State Governor, represented by Professor Ijeoma Iheukwumere, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, expressed the state government's interest in educational development and child protection during the event.

Methodist Bishop Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, who serves as President of Vision Africa, explained that the school debate competition was designed to nurture a new generation of leaders across various sectors of society.

The competition concluded with Methodist Girls High School Umueze Umuahia defeating Valley View Ohafia in the grand finale, showcasing the intellectual capabilities of students while addressing important social issues affecting young people.

This initiative aligns with growing concerns about media influence on children and teenagers, particularly as digital platforms continue to expand their reach across Nigerian households.
