Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted his players did not perform well in Wednesday night's Europa League final, which saw them lose 1-0 to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao.
Brennan Johnson scored the only goal of the match in the first half following a defensive mix-up by the Red Devils. Despite United's attempts to equalize after the break, they failed to break down Spurs' defense.
"I was always really honest with you guys," Amorim told TNT Sports after the match. "We did not perform well today but we were better than the opponent."
"In the second half we tried everything with the centre defenders players wide, crosses, going inside the box. I think today was not the day. We were not perfect, we have a lot to improve but I am always honest with you guys," he added.
The defeat marks a disappointing end to Manchester United's European campaign and continues their poor record against Tottenham this season. This loss means United have now been defeated in all four fixtures against Ange Postecoglou's team during the 2024/25 campaign.
The victory gives Tottenham their first European trophy in recent years, while Manchester United will need to regroup as they look ahead to next season under Amorim's leadership.
