Former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has called on head coach Ruben Amorim to give Andre Onana and Antony another opportunity to redeem themselves at the club next season despite facing heavy criticism for their performances.
Both players endured difficult campaigns last season, with Antony being loaned out to Real Betis in the second half of the season after failing to impress. Meanwhile, Cameroonian goalkeeper Onana has made several high-profile mistakes since joining from Inter Milan two years ago.
Recent reports have linked Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez with a potential move to Old Trafford as a replacement for Onana. However, Van der Sar believes both players still have something to offer at Manchester United.
Van der Sar Backs Struggling Duo
When asked about Manchester United's transfer dealings this summer, Van der Sar expressed optimism about the club's direction while making a specific case for Antony's return.
"They [Man United] are on the right track [in their transfer dealings this summer]," Van der Sar told The Sun. "Maybe Garnacho is going to go. I'd say bring Antony back, but I'm not sure if that is realistic."
Regarding Onana's future at the club, the Dutchman acknowledged the goalkeeper's inconsistency but backed his quality in a separate interview with talkSPORT.
"He's not been consistent in his performances this year," Van der Sar admitted. "With the qualities he has, he should be able to play for Manchester United, of course, for next season."
The comments come at a crucial time for both players as Amorim plans his squad for the upcoming season, with several transfer decisions still to be made.
Van der Sar's endorsement carries significant weight given his legendary status at Manchester United, where he won four Premier League titles and the Champions League during his playing career.
