Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that President Bola Tinubu will be Nigeria's sole presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 general elections, asserting that all other political parties have been "reduced to shreds."

Speaking at the ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) National Summit in Abuja on Thursday, Akpabio praised Tinubu's performance since assuming office in 2023, suggesting that the president deserves a second term.

"I want to move that not only would President Tinubu be the sole candidate for the presidency in 2027, but he would also be the sole candidate for the whole Nigerian population," Akpabio stated. "Because all other political parties have been turned into shreds. Nigerians are saying that because you have done a difficult job well, it's time for us to reward you by sending you back to the presidency."

The Senate President's endorsement follows a similar move by the Progressive Governors' Forum, which has also backed Tinubu for a second term. The forum's chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, disclosed this at the summit, acknowledging that Northern APC governors had already endorsed the president.

"We acknowledge the resolution of these governors that the President should be used and adopted as our flag bearer for the 2027 presidential election for a second term," Uzodimma said.

The governor further charged APC governors to "take responsibility to market all federal government policies, occupy all the political space in their domains, and win all elections in their states come 2027."

This endorsement comes amid reports of an emerging anti-Tinubu coalition, with the Labour and New Democratic (LND) movement reportedly joining forces to challenge the president in the next election cycle.

The APC National Summit, attended by President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other party stalwarts, appears to be setting the stage for the ruling party's strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
