The coalition opposing President Bola Tinubu's anticipated 2027 re-election bid has gained significant momentum with the League of Northern Democrats (LND) announcing its decision to join the movement.

Umar Ardo, Convener of the LND, made this announcement following an expanded meeting of the league held on Thursday in Abuja. The development represents a potentially significant shift in Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the next general elections.

According to Ardo, the league will make a final decision on May 30th regarding whether the coalition will align with an existing political party or register an entirely new one to advance their agenda against the incumbent president.

"We just finished our deliberation and we have resolved basically eight issues. First, we approve our constitution as an association of Northern Nigeria. We approve the leadership of the LND," Ardo stated while reading the communiqué from the meeting.

The communiqué further revealed that two committees have been established to explore political options. "The committee for fusing into another political party was headed by Governor Lyol Imoke. The committee for registering a new political party was chaired by Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Ardo was the secretary of that subcommittee," the statement read in part.

This development comes amid increasing political activities surrounding the 2027 elections, with various groups positioning themselves either in support of or against President Tinubu's potential second term bid.

The LND's decision to join the anti-Tinubu coalition suggests growing opposition to the current administration from the northern region, which could potentially reshape electoral dynamics in the upcoming election cycle.

Political analysts note that with prominent figures like former Governors Imoke and Amaechi involved in the coalition's strategic committees, the opposition movement appears to be attracting significant political weight across regional lines.

As May 30th approaches, all eyes will be on the LND's final decision regarding their political strategy, which could potentially alter Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
