A Labour Party (LP) chieftain and chairmanship aspirant, Ifeanyichukwu Ajaegbu, has revealed why many party members are defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that those leaving never truly embraced LP's ideology of caring for ordinary citizens.
Speaking on Wednesday after purchasing his nomination form to contest for the Abuja Municipal Council chairmanship position, Ajaegbu expressed confidence that LP has the capacity to win all six area council chairmanship positions in the upcoming Federal Capital Territory elections scheduled for June 25, 2025.
"Remember that the Labour Party is built for the ordinary workers. Those defecting from the Labour Party entered into the party with the ideology of the People's Democratic Party and All Progressives Party, not LP. If they truly had LP's ideology, they wouldn't be defecting when Mama, Papa, and Pikin are crying, showing they lack wisdom," Ajaegbu stated.
He further emphasized that the LP FCT chapter under Julius Abure's leadership has overcome its recent internal crisis and is now ready to compete effectively against the APC and PDP in the upcoming elections.
The FCT Labour Party Chairman, Diugwu Peter, who was also present at the event, confirmed that Ajaegbu is the fifth aspirant to purchase the chairmanship nomination form at the cost of N8 million. Peter assured that the party has not endorsed any candidate and remains committed to conducting free and fair primaries.
"The war is over; we are now moving forward," Peter declared, referring to the party's recent internal challenges. "The election must be free and fair; we have not anointed any candidate."
This development comes as political parties intensify preparations for the FCT area council elections, with the Labour Party aiming to capitalize on its growing popularity following its performance in the 2023 general elections.
