Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has cast doubt on his old club's chances ahead of their Europa League final clash with Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao on Wednesday night.

Ferdinand, speaking to Optus Sport, admitted he "cannot call a Man United result" due to the team's inconsistent performances throughout the Premier League season.

"I don't think Man United fans can be too surprised [if Tottenham win the Europa League]," Ferdinand said. "Tottenham beat us three times already this season. So it's not going to be a surprise if they beat us a fourth time."

The comments come at a critical time for Manchester United, who face Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side in what could be their only chance to secure European football for next season.

Ferdinand's remarks follow his recent criticism of Manchester United's recruitment strategy since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement, where he named four players he believes the club should not have sold.

The Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur is scheduled to kick off on Wednesday night in Bilbao, with both teams looking to end their season with silverware.
