Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has publicly confirmed the formation of an opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the Arewa TechFest in Katsina on Wednesday, El-Rufai, now a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), revealed that a "very important meeting" took place between himself, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and other opposition stakeholders.

"Yesterday at 8 PM, there was a very important meeting of the coalition we're putting together to ensure that President Tinubu goes back to Lagos," El-Rufai stated.

The former governor, however, expressed support for the current Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, suggesting that the coalition would retain him if they succeed in taking power. "Though we will still keep Bosun Tijani, we will still keep the minister because he is doing good work," he added.

Sources close to the development have indicated that the opposition coalition has been formed and will soon be publicly unveiled. The coalition, reportedly spearheaded by Atiku Abubakar, aims to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.

This development marks a significant political realignment as former rivals Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai have apparently set aside their differences to work toward a common goal of wresting power from the current administration.

El-Rufai had previously raised concerns about the APC, describing it as "a virus" that would want to "infiltrate and infest" the SDP, suggesting growing tensions between him and his former party.

The 2027 presidential race appears to be taking shape early, with opposition figures already making strategic moves more than two years before the election.
