The Department of State Services (DSS) in Niger State has announced a strategic partnership with the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) to combat the alarming rise in gender-based violence and social vices involving underage girls and women in the state.

During a courtesy visit by the Niger State chapter of FIDA, the DSS Director, Alhaji Usman Bello Hussain, expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of young girls and women in various social vices across the state.

"The partnership aims to support the domestication of the Violence Against Persons (VAP) law in Niger State, which would replace the outdated penal code," Hussain stated during the meeting.

The DSS Director assured FIDA members of the agency's unwavering commitment to protecting the rights of girls and women against all forms of molestation. He emphasized that collaboration between security agencies and civil society organizations is crucial in addressing gender-based violence and creating a safer environment for vulnerable populations.

Mrs. Bolanle Jibogun, the State Chairperson of FIDA, highlighted the urgent need for new legislation to effectively address and punish perpetrators of gender-based violence. She advocated for the implementation of the VAP law to replace existing frameworks that have proven inadequate in protecting women and girls.

The partnership represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing concerns about violence against women and girls in Niger State, with both organizations pledging to work together to create awareness, provide support for victims, and ensure offenders are brought to justice.
