President Bola Tinubu's official visit to Abia State, initially scheduled for May 23, 2025, has been postponed to early June, the state government announced on Tuesday.
According to Abia State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the postponement was necessitated by the President's tight schedule. The visit was planned for the commissioning of the Port Harcourt Road in Aba and the flag-off ceremony of the Abia Medical City project.
Speaking after the state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti, Kanu confirmed that despite the President's postponement, First Lady Remi Tinubu will proceed with her scheduled visit to Abia on May 23 to launch her humanitarian project.
The commissioner also shared several other developments from the executive council meeting. He announced that staff of the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic) in Aba, whose promotions had been withheld since 2008, have now received their long-awaited promotions, with payment of withheld salaries already commencing.
In education news, Kanu revealed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted full accreditation to several programs at Abia State University, Uturu. The approved programs include Law, Agriculture, Mass Communication, and Educational Management and Planning. Additionally, the state government and ABSU's governing council have approved the employment of additional lecturers to fill vacant positions at the institution.
Regarding the recent suspension of Professor Vincent Onwe, the former Rector of Abia State College of Education Technical Arochukwu, the commissioner announced that a panel has been established to investigate his activities during his tenure.
The rescheduled presidential visit is expected to highlight significant infrastructure and healthcare developments in Abia State under Governor Otti's administration.
