Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, has voiced strong opposition to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forming a coalition with other political parties ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise Television's Morning Show on Tuesday, Udenwa stated that discussions about potential coalitions stem from the current crisis within the PDP, which he believes is temporary.

"The PDP, which is the leading opposition party, is in a present crisis. As soon as this crisis is over, I believe the issue of coalition will not arise," Udenwa said.

His comments come amid reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had offered Labour Party's Peter Obi the vice-presidential position in a proposed single-term coalition ticket for the 2027 elections.

Udenwa acknowledged that if the PDP's internal challenges persist, a coalition might become necessary, particularly given what he described as the poor performance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

"If PDP continues to be in the dilemma it finds itself today, I believe coalition can work to some extent. Right now, APC has performed so poorly that Nigerians are looking for an alternative, and if that alternative is a coalition, so be it," he explained.

However, the former governor emphasized his personal preference for the PDP to resolve its internal issues rather than pursuing coalition arrangements.

"I, in my own mind, don't believe that coalition is the best option. The best option is PDP rediscovering itself as a leading opposition party, with other parties coalescing into it or cooperating with it under the PDP platform," Udenwa stated.

He further criticized the concept of political coalitions, suggesting they often become vehicles for personal ambitions rather than platforms for genuine political cooperation.

"That is what I think will work. Ideally, not just a coalition, where people bring their personal ambitions and all that," he concluded.

The Obidient Movement, a support group for Peter Obi, has reportedly debunked claims of an alliance between Obi and Atiku for the 2027 elections.
