Panic erupted at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday when a gas explosion occurred at one of the venues hosting the ongoing 2024 National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games.
According to reports, the incident happened when a gas truck supplying fuel to the complex's generating set suddenly caught fire, triggering immediate alarm among athletes and spectators who fled the scene for safety.
Emergency response teams arrived promptly at the sports complex and were able to bring the situation under control. As of the time of this report, no casualties have been confirmed in connection with the explosion.
Despite the frightening incident, sporting activities at the venue have resumed. The complex, which hosts handball, squash, and badminton competitions, was back in operation shortly after emergency services contained the fire.
The Gateway Games, Nigeria's premier multi-sport event, has continued without further disruption, with athletes from across the country competing in various sporting disciplines at different venues throughout Ogun State.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the cause of the explosion or potential safety measures being implemented to prevent similar incidents during the remainder of the tournament.
