The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced new mandatory safety regulations for all contingents participating in future National Sports Festivals, following the tragic death of 22 Kano State athletes in a motor accident.
The athletes lost their lives while returning from the recently concluded 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed 'Gateway Games 2024', which was held in Ogun State.
According to a statement issued by NSC Director of Press, Kehinde Ajayi, all participating contingents will now be required to obtain comprehensive insurance coverage, while vehicles used for transportation must be mechanically certified and fully insured.
"This requirement has been communicated to all participating states and will be strictly enforced moving forward," Ajayi stated.
Enhanced Safety Protocols
The Commission revealed that a compliance audit will be conducted ahead of future festivals to ensure all contingents adhere to essential safety, insurance, and welfare standards. Additionally, stronger monitoring mechanisms will be implemented during national events to prevent similar tragedies.
The NSC also plans to convene a post-Games safety roundtable with all State Sports Commissions to review travel protocols and exchange safety best practices.
"This incident must not be in vain. It must inspire all levels of government, federal and state authorities alike, to enhance the systems that protect those who dedicate their strength and spirit to represent our nation in sports," the statement noted.
While acknowledging that transportation arrangements for state contingents are the responsibility of individual state sports councils, the Commission emphasized "the urgent need for a coordinated national framework for safety and welfare."
Ajayi further disclosed that the Commission has established communication with the Kano State government and will maintain a close partnership in response to the unfortunate incident.
The new safety measures represent a significant shift in policy for Nigerian sports administration, placing greater emphasis on athlete welfare and safety during national sporting events.
