Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila has issued a strong warning to Northern governors and traditional leaders regarding the implementation of state police, urging them to approach the initiative with caution and sensitivity.
In formal letters addressed to the Northern Governors Forum and Northern Nigeria Traditional Leaders Forum, Senator Sumaila emphasized the importance of preventing state police from becoming tools of exclusion against opposition or minority groups in their respective states.
"Misuse or politicization of state policing powers could exacerbate vulnerabilities and sow discord among our diverse populations," Sumaila cautioned in his correspondence to Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, who chairs the Northern Governors Forum, and the Sultan of Sokoto, who leads the traditional rulers.
The senator expressed his full support for the National Assembly to expedite legislation establishing state police, describing it as "critical to enhancing the security framework in our states, enabling more localized and effective responses to threats."
Sumaila highlighted the need for all stakeholders to collaborate in building a framework that promotes inclusivity, transparency, and accountability to gain citizens' trust and support. He acknowledged the vital role of traditional leaders in governance, noting their closeness to communities as "invaluable assets in navigating these complexities."
"As we move forward, let us join hands in a unified effort to address the security challenges in Northern Nigeria, prioritizing the well-being of all citizens above all else," the senator stated, calling for concerted efforts to secure the North from its ongoing security challenges.
The senator also commended both forums for their commitment to addressing the pressing security issues affecting the region, expressing sympathy for the loss of lives and properties resulting from insecurity.
"It is disheartening to witness the loss of lives, properties, and the deep pain endured by families and communities as a result of the ongoing insecurity. These challenges are not just statistics; they represent real human suffering and underscore the urgent need for effective solutions," Sumaila remarked.
This call comes amid growing national consensus on the need for state policing to address Nigeria's complex security challenges, with the National Executive Council recently endorsing the creation of state police across the country.
